Wan He Lou 萬合樓

Wan He Lou 萬合樓 is a new Chinese restaurant that just opened few months ago. Located at the heart of Jalan Besar, it is not exactly that easy to locate unless you are familiar with that area. For myself, the easiest way to get there is to alight at Farrer Park MRT Station and walk, which takes less than 15mins.

Wan He Lou 萬合樓
65 Maude Road, #01-01

No GST, no service charge. Nice!

The place was smaller than I expected, more of a casual Chinese restaurant for simple meal gatherings.

Wall of fame? That's Chef Lau with local celebrities like Zoe Tay, Edmund Chen, just to name a few.

When this Fresh Vegetable Juice ($3) was served, I was rather hesitant to try it. After taking one sip, I was surprised that it did not taste like what I think it taste like - bitter. It did not have a raw veggie taste. In fact, the taste was refreshingly sweet and fruity, with a hint of sour plum. Very-very niceee!

Chef Lau recently won in one of the episodes for the MediaCorp cooking program - 3 Plus 1 “三菜一汤", hence they decided to introduce this new set lunch (三菜一汤) created by him. It features 3 gourmet dishes plus soup, including a bowl of rice for only $12.80 nett. Do take note that it is available only on weekdays.

Sliced Fish in Ginger Sauce 青姜茸生鱼片

The (green) ginger sauce is a mix of ginger, spring onions and other special herbs. The sauce added a flavorful touch to the fresh tasting fish, without the ginger taste being too overwhelming.

Prawn in Pineapple Sauce 黄金凤梨虾球

The pineapple sauce was too sweet for my liking. And, the prawn did not have the succulent taste I was looking forward to.

Qing Long Cai 蒜茸青龙菜

A hybrid between 2 chives, it tasted nothing like them. It was the first time I heard of this veggie, and of course my first time trying it. I gotta say I love the taste! The veggie was very fresh, with natural sweetness and a slight crunch to it. Yummilicious :d~ A MUST TRY!

Chicken Herbal Soup 滋补康乐鸡汤

A very nourishing bowl of soup, which tasted sooo good... rich and flavorful with a hint of sweetness! Instead of using normal chicken, they use caro chicken that is lower in cholesterol.

Seriously, I would not mind having a second bowl :x

Lobster porridge 招牌龙虾粥 (from $29.90 onwards)

Here comes the main star, their signature lobster porridge! It was my first time having lobster with porridge and I really enjoyed the broth a lot! I had a few bowls as it was too yummy to resist. On the other hand, the lobster was quite fresh and fleshy. One bowl like this is enough for 2 to 3 pax.

Fyi, the lobster can be prepared in 15 ways according to your preference eg. butter cereal, black pepper, etc.

Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg 咸蛋脆莲藕 $11.90

It was damn addictive. I was eating non-stop, one after another. The savory-sweet taste was perfect - not too salty. What a great idea to combine salted egg with lotus slices AND deep-fried them to crispy perfection (sans the greasiness)!

Pan Fried Kurobuta Pork 香煎黑豚肉 $14.90

The exquisite taste of Kurobuta Pork is unlike the usual pork meat. Super tender and juicy! The sweet-tasting sauce complemented the flavorful taste of the "black pig", which is great to pair with rice in my opinion.

Lala with Chili Sauce 辣醬炒拉拉 $15.90

Last but not least, it was a "last-minute" add-on. The clams are bigger than the usual ones I tried, as they are from the US. The sauce was spicy and a lil' sweet, something different from the spicier sambal chilli ones I love. Well, I like them either ways.

That's all for now. Looking forward to visit Wan He Lou again! Lobster feast with my siblings maybe? :D
